The Department of Special Education was established at Al-Zahraa University for Women in the 2023–2024 academic year, under the patronage and support of Imam Hussein Holy Shrine, in response to the growing need for specialised educational professionals in the field of special education. The Department aims to graduate scientifically and professionally qualified female teachers capable of working with individuals with special needs, diagnosing their challenges, and providing appropriate educational and instructional programmes. This contributes to their effective integration into society and promotes the principle of educational equity. The Department also seeks to foster ethical and humanitarian values, enhance scientific awareness, and support scientific research in the field of special education, keeping pace with modern developments and addressing the needs of the community.

The Department aspires to establish itself as a promising department among special education departments at the local and regional levels and to play its role among them.

The Department of Special Education at the Faculty of Education, Al-Zahraa University for Women, seeks to prepare female graduates with a distinguished level of knowledge and advanced skills to work with individuals with special needs and gifted individuals, thereby meeting the needs of society and contributing to the service of the great nation of Iraq.

1. Preparing specialised professionals in the field of special education who are capable of providing special education and support services to individuals with disabilities, thereby meeting the needs of the labour market and the community. 2. Developing the capacity of professionals to diagnose and assess individuals with special educational needs. 3. Training female students to conduct scientific research that serves individuals with special educational needs. 4. Cooperating with institutions concerned with this field, thereby strengthening community partnerships in supporting individuals with special educational needs. 5. Activating continuing education activities, including workshops and training courses, to raise awareness among teachers about special education. 6. Contributing to raising awareness of community problems and issues, their underlying causes, and ways of addressing and preventing them. 7. Providing a suitable environment for teaching staff and female students to achieve educational objectives.
